XEDT questions

What is an XEDT?+

An Xtra extreme day trip is a next level EDT. You fly out in the morning, spend about 3½ hours in the first city, take a short train of 2 hours or less to a second city, and fly back home.

How long is the day?+

Very long. Most XEDTs start with an early morning flight and land back home late at night, often 18 hours or more door to door. Sleep well the night before and plan what you want to see in each city.

What if the train or a flight is late?+

Every flight and train is a separate booking, so connections are not protected. If the train is delayed you could miss your flight home, and the airline won't wait. Take an earlier train if you can, and check the timetables on the day. Exdatrips is an information service and cannot guarantee any connection.

Do I need to book the train in advance?+

Not always, as trains between the two cities run often, but booking ahead is often cheaper and the train time we show is a suggestion. The fare we show for the train is an estimate.

Is the price the total?+

No. The total is the one-way air fares when we last searched, and fares change all the time. The train is an estimate and not included in the flight total. Always check the price with the airline and the train operator before you book.

What should I bring?+

As little as possible: a small rucksack that fits under the seat, your passport or ID, a charged phone and a power bank. There is no hotel to leave things in, so you carry everything all day.

Train times are typical and booked separately with the operator. All XEDTs are inspirational suggestions only. An XEDT packs two cities into one day with no overnight stay, so there is very little slack: each flight and train is a separate booking and connections are not protected. If the train or your outbound flight is late, your flight home will not wait, and you may need to pay for a hotel or a new flight. Exdatrips is an information service and cannot guarantee any connection, and is not responsible for delays, cancellations, missed connections or any costs that follow. Take the earliest sensible train, check the latest timetables and consider travel insurance.

Prices and availability change constantly. Always confirm the final price, times and conditions with the airline and train operator before booking. Read the XEDT questions.
